Canon says that the TR8520 $89.99 at Amazon is 35 percent smaller than the MX922 $256.99 at Amazon, which the company attaches to a new printing machine, smaller circuit boards and power supply, an improved paper path, and a reworking interior design – in other words, redesigned. Counting 7.5 from 17.3 to 13.8 inches (HWD) with its discs closed, and weighing 17.5 lbs, the TR8520 is really significantly smaller and more than 8 pounds lighter than its predecessor, making it much more comfortable Fit for the average desktop.

Even so, there’s no shortage of miniature printers in this category these days. Setting up the TR8520 is simple and straightforward, although it involves an extra step or two more than most others alike. Even so, once you plug it in and turn it on, the large TR8520’s Control Panel guides you through each process — from unpacking and loading the five ink cartridges to completing the two paper trays. No part of the installation process remains for misconceptions.

In addition to printer and scanner drivers, the software bundle includes: Scan Tool, Canon’s pretty rugged scanner. Printer Assistant? Display picture? My Image Garden (a collection of filters and utilities, such as easy photoprinting, creative filters, Full HD movie printing, image correction/enhancement, image cropping and red-eye correction). and Quick Menu (a collection of icons located in the lower right corner of your screen and provide quick access to the features listed here and more).

Just fast enough
One thing most of these family oriented, have in common, is that unless they print small photos, they are slow. No matter what it says in the box or advertising on the internet about the “Fast 15 pages per minute, ” 15ppm to print daily text documents are slow, compared to their business counterparts peers. An equally priced business spray, such as Canon’s maximum MB2720 $99.99 at Amazon, is rated (by Canon) in 9 pages faster than the TR8520’s 15ppm, and actually prints at least as much faster, too. (I tried TR8520 over Ethernet from our standard Intel Core i5 computer running Windows 10 Professional.)

Of the other models discussed here, all except the Epson XP-640 (13PPM) have also been rated at 15ppm for simple monochrome pages. If this was said, we timed the TR8520 print to 12 pages, just formatted Microsoft Word document at 12.8 ppm. This is only one-tenth of ppm faster than the HP 7855, one-tenth of the PPM slower than the Canon TS9020, 2.5 ppm faster than the Canon TS8020, and 3.3 ppm faster than the Epson XP-640.

When you combined the results from the previous simple 12-page Word document with them by printing our colors PDF, Excel and PowerPoint graphics-and uploaded documents, the speed TR8520’s vertically by about 60 percent, to 4.7 ppm. This 60% difference may sound like a lot, but it’s not uncommon. Even with these low scores, he defeated the other AIO discussed here.

As mentioned, these Home-based AIO usually print photos relatively faster than documents. TR8520 printed our two photo samples on average 35 seconds, which was second to the slowest here, but still well under a minute.

Worth waiting for
When it comes to quality output, especially photos, the competition in this genre is steep. While some print better than others, none are, therefore, unacceptable. The Canon with five and six inks, the photo-enhanced AIO consistently produces some of the best photos I’ve seen, and the TR8520 is no exception. The text in our test documents came out crisp, well fashioned and easy to read where I needed zooming in to see it, and beyond. Big guy also looked good, no jagged edges.

The test handouts and Excel diagrams are printed with evenly flowing gradients and solid fills. Only one chart, which has a solid black background, showed any stripes, although it was quite significant (and probably corrected with some tweaking). But all other colored documents, even those with features that many printers do not reproduce successfully, looked better than good, more than acceptable for home and work use.

But they are photos that are the bread and butter of Canon inks, and like its predecessor and siblings (and some competitors), the TR8520 constantly makes the very bright, vivid, detailed and accurate color photographs. If you start with good digital content, you will be pleased with the images from the copy.

A race with many winners
There are obviously a lot of candidates here when it comes to high quality AIO. The trick is to find the right mix feature for the right price. If the quality of printing is your primary requirement, most of the AIO I mentioned will serve you well. The Canon PIXMA TR8520, along with the brothers of the TS series and the Epson XP-640, produce all excellent photos and documents. The photos of four HP 7855 inks are more than a BlackBerry (and, when you use the company’s Instant ink program, the least expensive to print). If the need for economical photo printing outweighs your desire for the best possible prints, the HP model is a reasonable choice. Otherwise, given its wide range of features, including an ROI, and an amazing overall print quality, TR8520 is the AIO choice of our editors for Home Office and family use.
